Exodus and the Transfiguration

Main Point

The transfiguration points to who Jesus is - our promised rescuer!

Overview

There are loads of similarities with Moses and how he was God's rescuer figure in the Exodus and Jesus in the transfiguration (where Moses and Elijah also turn up!). It all points to telling us that Jesus is God's chosen rescuer - the one who is going to save us and whose kingdom will never end.

Bible Study and Talk Ideas

Below are some ideas of what you could do for a Bible study or talk connected with this video. Obviously, you will need to tailor things to your context with your local knowledge of the group you will working with.

You'll find Moses in Exodus - the bit about him having a bright shining face in front of God's people is in Exodus 34:29-35. The transfiguration is in Matthew 17:1-13 and Mark 9:2-13.

Bible Study Ideas
Starter activities:
  • Play a game of "Who is this?". Have some hints and people have to say who the person is (like a police badge, and police helmet for a police officer). This can be used to draw out how all these signs in the video point to who Jesus is
  • Do a spot the difference game (either two pictures or two trays of objects). This links to the similarities and differences shown in the video between Moses and Jesus
Some interpretation questions:
  • Who is Jesus?
  • How does what happens to Moses help point to who Jesus is?
  • How does this story show how the Old Testamant and New Testament link together?
  • How should we respond to who Jesus is?
Craft ideas to take home:
  • Draw pictures of what happens to Moses and Jesus to show the similaties
  • Create a CV for Jesus that includes all the signs that point towards Him to show who He is
Talk Ideas
  • Explain how the Old Testament points to Jesus
  • Why are Peter, James and John being shown Jesus being transfigured?
  • What's the implication for us?
