Below are some ideas of what you could do for a Bible study or talk connected with this video. Obviously, you will need to tailor things to your context with your local knowledge of the group you will working with.
This video would work really well with any pssages about going out with the gospel. For example, Matthew 4:18-22 or Mark 1:16-22 where the first disciples are called to be fishers of men. It would also go well with Matthew 28:16-20 which is the Great Commission.
Bible Study Ideas
Starter activities:
- Write down all the names of people you can think of that you don't think know Jesus yet. There will hoppefully be quite a few!
- You could play a fishing game of some sort and then move to fishers of men and explain what that means
- Have some tasks to do set out around the room (such as dressing in a costume, building a jenga tower etc.) and a leader in the middle of the room shouts "Fishers of Men" at random times - when "Fishers of Men" is shouted, everyone has to stop what they are doing and come sit in the middle of the room until they are sent out again. You could then use this game to talk about how the disciples were called from their day job of fishing for fish to give up everything and follow Jesus
Some interpretation questions:
- What does it mean to be a Fisher of Men?
- Was it just the first disciples that this applies to or does it apply to us too?
- Who does the work of salvation? What is our role?
Craft ideas to take home:
- Make a fishing rod and some fish. Write a name of a friend on each fish that they would like to pray for and talk to about Jesus
- You could make a paper megaphone to symbolise going out to tell the great news of the gospel
Talk Ideas
- How did the disciples respond to Jesus' call?
- Why/how did it cost them to come and follow Him?
- Has the gospel gone out? Yes! But still needs to go out
- How does this story/commission challenge us today?
