The Story of Jonah

Main Point

God is merciful and powerful to save despite Jonah's weakness.

Overview

Jack and Polly tell the story of Jonah although Jack seems to have got a little confused on some of the details! Polly though is able to tell the story of how Jonah was sent to Ninevah but he didn't want to go. We see that although Jonah doesn't want God to be merciful to the people of Ninevah (despite God being merciful to him), God is still powerful to save.

Bible Study and Talk Ideas

Below are some ideas of what you could do for a Bible study or talk connected with this video. Obviously, you will need to tailor things to your context with your local knowledge of the group you will be working with.

Bible Study Ideas
Starter activities:
  • Draw a cartoon strip of the story
  • Think about times when you haven't done what you've been asked. What were the consequences? You could then link that to Jonah not doing as God told him
Some interpretation questions:
  • What does Jonah's responses to God show about what he thinks about God and the people of Ninevah?
  • What does God's response to Jonah and the people of Ninevah tell us about God?
  • How does Jonah's story challenge us?
Craft ideas to take home:
  • Have two arrows (one bigger than the other) connected via a split pin. The bigger arrow says "God's Way" and the other says "My Way". You could explain that often the arrows are pointing in opposite directions and link this to sin. We need to get our arrow pointing in the same direction as God's arrow. And yet even when our arrows aren't aligned, God is still powerful to work
Talk Ideas
  • Use the text to guide the talk
  • Go through the different characters. What do they do? How do they respond?
  • What does this show about God?
  • How should we respond?
